Why I love the Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights

Why I Love the Osborne Spectacle of Dancing Lights | Rolling with the Magic

I was so excited to hear that Star Wars Land was coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios. And now I’m just extremely sad to hear that this year will be the final year to enjoy the Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights. I understand that in order for something new to arrive that we sometimes have to let go of attractions we know and love. But not my lights! As I try to wrap my brain around the fact that not only will I not see the lights this year but never again, here’s a post I wrote about my love of the Osborne Lights.

My niece saw them for the first time in 2014.

I can tell you why I love the Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights lights with one word, joy. They make me happy. I could tell you the back story, which is pretty cool, or explain how many lights are in the display but honestly none of those things really matter to me.

We saw The Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights for the first time in 2011. After years of wishing and hoping, I finally got to be at Walt Disney World during the holidays. I was fully expecting something else to be my favorite but it ended up being those dancing lights.

Sitting in a huge crowd, we waited for the lights to begin. I was starting to feel a little uncomfortable. Sitting in a wheelchair surrounded by people is not my favorite thing. But then the music started, the lights started their dance, and wonderful, soapy fake snow started to fall. I think my heart grew two sizes.

I wholeheartedly love Castle Dream Lights and the snow on Main Street but there is just something about being in my favorite park during my favorite time of year that makes me so happy that I literally have tears in my eyes while I am typing this. I know it’s sappy and I know all of the other sensible/Grinch reasons why I sound silly. I don’t care. Life is hard and not fun so much of the time that if you don’t let yourself enjoy the silly then you are missing out. Let your freak flag fly people!

Your photos are gorgeous! I was exactly the same way- super excited to hear that something, anything(!) was coming to Hollywood Studios and then immediately sad when I heard the light would be no more. I really hope they find a home for them somewhere on Disney property, it would be such a shame if they never returned in any capacity.

Wow Melissa, I’m crying reading your post. Call me a sappy person, but I am sad about the lights going away beyond description. I know I’m not in the same situation you are in, but I have a lot of pain and other health problems so when I go to see the lights, I lose myself into another realm. Even with the pain I can experience joy. I can only imagine how it is for you. I can empathize with what you are saying. For my son and I, we have sat there many a night on this one place on the curb and just enjoyed the precious times. It is so sad to me that this year will be it. I am in the process of writing an homage to the lights. I am sad for not only us but for you and the other people that the lights brought joy to that this will be the last year for them.

Melissa, your photography is officially off the charts!  I am so glad that my family got to spend many magical evenings on Streets of America, lit with these brilliant lights.  With the future of this display in question, your post is gold!!

My first experience was with my parents and I didn’t even realize that Studios had anything holiday related! I wandered to the backlot and almost teared up! It’s probably my favorite holiday themed area in all of Disney 🙂

We are going to WDW this year during Christmas! I am so excited, but after reading this I am even more excited! This will be our first time at Disney with all the Christmas decorations!!
Where is the best place to see this from, or is it just so big that anywhere is fine?

Yay! I would walk around and see them from lots of different angles. There really isn’t a bad spot! Just make sure you stand under the canopy for a little while. It is so cool!

I truly hope that we get to experience this someday soon! I know that seeing the pictures doesn’t do it justice because so many people claim it as their family Disney holiday “thing”. You described it so beautifully, Melissa. Thank you.

Thank you! It is definitely more impressive in person. 🙂
