The Girls: A Sherman Brothers Week Chat (Part 2)

The Boys: The Sherman Brothers Story

I had watched The Boys: The Sherman Brother’s Story a few years ago when I started my blog and was really getting into the history of the parks and movies. So when Estelle and I decided to devote a week to all things Sherman Brothers we both knew that this documentary had to be a part of it. Since E is brilliant, she suggested we watch the movie and then have a Google chat discussing our thoughts. It was so much fun! Once we stopped talking about Scotch, A Rod, and shopping we discussed some of our thoughts about movie and a few things that we learned.

If you missed the first half of our chat you can find it here at This Happy Place Blog.

Estelle
So what’s something new you learned while watching? Was there something surprising?

Melissa
I guess it was just the amount of wonderful songs they created. I would be happy with one hit or song in an attraction. To see their fingerprints on soooo much amazes me.

Estelle
So true. I loved how Walt had so much confidence in them.

Melissa
Wouldn’t it be awesome if you could hear some of their chats.

Estelle
Um yes! I mean, it was almost enough to hear them recall the moments they spent with Walt. After so many years, they were still emotional about it and you can see how much they admired him and were grateful for all he did for them.
You could tell that was genuine.

Melissa
Definitely. I got emotional!

Estelle
Me too. I was totally tearing up. Though, I did that plenty of times during the whole thing. I’m a sap!
One detail that surprised me was how they were writing music for Mary Poppins before they had the rights. I did not know that was happening, and I am so curious if that’s going to be a part of Saving Mr. Banks.

Melissa
I didn’t know that either. Walt was pretty confident I guess! It will be interesting to see what’s included in that film. I know the previews are really upbeat but I wonder what they will really share.

Estelle
I know it’s kind of off-topic but I have no idea WHY they would fairy tale the P.L. Travers story. I was laughing when everyone in the documentary was describing her. She was not a nice lady at all.
And if you feel that way YEARS AND YEARS after working with someone? That’s quite an impression.

Melissa
I know. To say she was difficult is a major understatement.

Estelle
Was there anything you wanted to chat about in particular, M?

Melissa
I didn’t realize their father was a song writer as well. Soooo much talent in one family.

Estelle
Yes! Some New York roots too which I felt personality excited about. All the music from early in the documentary felt very fancy and very dapper. I wanted a soundtrack!

Melissa
I would buy that soundtrack. I love the vaudeville sound. That could be a whole other documentary. Fun fact, an Al Sherman song was on Cyndi Lauper’s She’s So Unusual album.

Estelle
That is an incredible fun fact.

Melissa
Google is amazing

Estelle
HA! I really really is.
Any closing thoughts about The Boys?

Melissa
I’m glad I know the history behind the songs now. While their story is sad at times it makes me appreciate their work.

Estelle
I agree! I mean, it’s great to love the songs and the attractions they helped bring to life but there’s something so interesting about knowing the back story. And that our Disney heroes are HUMAN.

Melissa
Yes!
Not everyone can write a great song but a great song writer can come from anywhere. I’ve watched Ratatouille too many times.

Estelle
That made me giggle.

Melissa
haha We should have a conversation in movie quotes sometime.

Estelle
Or just Sherman Brother lyrics?

Melissa
Challenge accepted!

Estelle
