In 2013 I was finally able to mark participating in a runDisney event off of my Disney bucket list. While we were at Disneyland we participated in the 5K. I was really nervous before the race as I usually am the first time before I do anything. But everything went smoothly. We had a wonderful time (you can read my trip report about the race here) and knew that we would definitely be participating in another runDisney event.
What I didn’t know was how soon that would be! In February 2014 we participated in the Royal Princess 5K during the Princess Half Marathon. It was our first race at Walt Disney World and I loved going through Epcot. I do a 5K there almost every trip so it will nice to get a medal for my efforts.
The registration process is a little different that when I participated in my first race. At our first 5K I simply noted on the registration form that I was in a wheelchair so they put Andrew and I in the last corral for the race. Now it has several options for you to choose from.
Time to set new goals!
But I have to admit I’ve been a runDisney slacker recently. The race is 2014 was the last time I participated. I could blame it on a few health issues I’ve had the last couple of years but really it was just me not sticking to my goals. A new year means it is time to set new goals and I really want to participate in another 5k and work my way back to the goal of participating in a runDisney 10K.
I feel fine in my wheelchair doing 5K’s but if I’m going to increase the milage I want to either invest in a racing wheelchair or, more likely, invest in one of these Free Wheel attachments. The Free Wheel looks awesome and I would be able to use it for more than just races. Andrew moved forward with his goals and participated in the half marathon in 2015 and the marathon in 2016. I am so proud of him!
Marathon weekend at Walt Disney World always seems to give people the motivation they need to start training. If you need some inspiration, check out the #CignaRunTogether. Cigna sponsors several athletes with great stories like Blake. He’ll be participating in the half marathon.
If you have participated in a runDisney race in a wheelchair I would love to hear your tips and advice. Or if you are on the fence about participating in 2017 give it a shot. I promise you won’t regret it!
