Hollywood Studios – A Blast from the Past

Welcome Day 4 of Hollywood Studios Week! My pal Estelle from This Happy Place Blog and I have been sharing posts and photos from one of our favorite places since the park turned 24 this week.

One of my favorite souvenirs through the years has become the park guide maps. It’s fun to look back through them to see how the parks have changed through the years. (Plus they’re free!) My first trip to Hollywood Studios was in 1993 when the park was still Disney-MGM Studios. Many of the attractions and restaurants like The Great Movie Ride and 50’s Prime Time Cafe are still around, there is a lot that has changed.

I really miss the Residential Street along the Studio Backlot Tour. And you could actually meet The Muppets! I also love the tiny Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on the Streets of America representing their meet and greet.

The original Backlot Tour had a walking portion titled Inside the Magic: Special Effects and Production Tour that was a separate attraction. Yesterland has some great info about how the tour originally looked.

Does anyone else remember Monster Sound? I need photos!

You could also get tickets to see the taping of a live show. The week of our vacation they were taping the game show Family Secrets.

Thanks for taking this short stroll down memory lane with me and make sure to stop by This Happy Place Blog and check out her post The Greys of Hollywood Studios.

Woohoo! ’93 was the year of my first (and so far only…gotta fix that…) trip to WDW and the then-Disney/MGM Studios! I loved the park as it appeared back then. I think “Back to Neverland” was one of the best things I’ve ever seen. And remember the little film with Michael Eisner, Roger Rabbit, Chernabog and a bunch of other characters all crowding into a screening room?

I love looking at maps- especially old park maps! I would have loved to have seen the residential street. There’s quite a bit here that was already gone before my first visit to DHS.

I’ve really enjoyed your series w/ Thus Happy Place Blog this week!
