Disneyland vs Magic Kingdom: Who has the better Adventureland?

Jungle Cruise

We visited Disneyland for the first time in September 2013. One of the lands I was look forward to visiting the most was Adventureland. It’s my favorite at the Magic Kingdom and I couldn’t wait to visit the original Tiki Room and have a Dole Whip. It’s still hard for me to say which is better, each one has it’s own set of pros (Tikis!) and cons (congestion). So to figure out who wins this battle lets do some comparisons.

The Entrance
Adventureland Disneyland
Adventureland’s entrance in Disneyland.

Both entrances have changed since the opening of the park. I know a lot of people miss the arch of the old bridge in the Magic Kingdom but for someone that travels on wheels I appreciate the new flat one. And honestly I do think I like the newer sign better. In Disneyland the entrance is much closer to the hub. It’s almost a toss up, I guess it depends on your taste and how attached you are to one or the other.

I’m just going to say it, hands down Disneyland wins on this one. I love the exterior of the building in the Magic Kingdom better but Disneyland’s version wins in every other category. It is the original after all! The pre-show area is so much cooler with the carved totem poles coming to life and introducing themselves.

The area is much less like a queue so you can stroll around and look at all of the different totems or get sit and enjoy the charm of the area.

It also has it’s own queue for Dole Whips. And even better, you can take them into the show!

But the best part has to be Maynard. We had no idea who he was or how awesome until he began his pre-show spiel. I can describe it in one word, amazing. I feel so lucky that we were able to meet him. He even told us to just stay where we were so we could enjoy the next show.

Awesome right??

Best of the Rest

Jungle Cruise Magic Kingdom

When it comes to The Jungle Cruise I prefer the Magic Kingdom version. It’s longer and the nostalgia I have for it is just too great to over come. And while I do believe that Disneyland’s version of Pirates of the Caribbean is cooler I like having it in Adventureland. Again it’s probably a nostalgia thing for me but I want my pirates where I expect them to be. 🙂

But when it comes to the little details Disneyland wins again. In South Seas Traders, one of the shops, you can find Shrunken Ned. You give him 50 cents, place your hand on the machine to be read, and he will give you some advice. It’s a fun experience and probably the cheapest souvenir that you will find in the Disney Parks.

So who wins? I guess it depends on where I’m at. If I’m in Disneyland I’ll probably tell you it’s my favorite but I’m going to to the same thing if I’m in the Magic Kingdom. It’s so hard to choose! The areas are both so different and I didn’t even discuss Indiana Jones. I think I need to plan another trip to Disneyland to help me decide. 🙂

Vert good points!  I’m so ready to head back to Disneyland… but I doubt I ever will.  So which park had the better Dole Whips?!

  2. Personally, I am drawn to anything that Walt had his hands in- can you imagine if this had become the dinner show that he originally intended?!  Until that  happens, having a Dole whip during the show is special enough.  😀   You are so lucky- with all of our trips to Disneyland we have never seen Maynard OR Ned- thanks for sharing the magic Melissa!

  3. Becca_LoveOurDisney

I am a Disneylander, but planning my first Walt Disney World vacation, so I love seeing the comparisons. Is the layout pretty similar for where the rides are in comparison to each other? For example, is the Jungle Cruise in WDW right near the Tiki Room?

  4. BryceYelverton

Adventureland is my favorite land as well! I do have a special place for the WDW version, but really the Indiana Jones section of Disneyland’s Adventureland is incredible even if it is small. Great job capturing the experience of the tiki room, I loved the pre-show area as well!

  5. disneyonwheels

    DawnCullo1  I think they taste a little better. 🙂

RoeMo326  I’m not sure. He used to be at The Haunted Mansion. I’m not sure if he is there much anymore. There is a video of him greeting guests in the stretch room that is awesome.

  7. Jenn Lissak

Since I’ve never been to Disneyland, I loved reading this – I can’t wit to compare for myself.  Honestly, I’m not a huge Adventureland person, but it looks like it’s so much more excited at DLR!

It is so hard to choose, I agree.  I had no idea about the Shrunken Ned
    – thank you for sharing that awesome detail.  Wondering – do the Dole
    Whips taste different in Disneyland?

  9. RoeMo326

You have to love Adventureland. I, like you, enjoy both, but I also love the detail and the charm of the Disneyland version. Dole whips in the Tiki Room do make everything better, don’t they? I LOVE that video of Maynard! I wish I would’ve seen him while I was there. Did he happen to say how long he had been working there? He is so awesome!

The Dole Whip looks so small to me – but that’s probably because I usually opt for the float. 🙂  I think it’s very cool that you can get one while in line for the Tiki Room (a tip I recently learned from Rosanne).  Man, I really, really need to get out to Disneyland one of these days!

LisaDiDomenicoCameron  I hope you guys get to visit. It’s such a fun place to see! I didn’t really discuss Indiana Jones Adventure too much but it is awesome. Especially if you are a fan of the films. There is also Tarzan’s Treehouse which we skipped because of the stairs.

LeeBeatens  Sometimes you can’t beat the old school attractions. 🙂

  13. disneyonwheels

JodiWhisenhunt  Thanks! I’m going to have to say the Dole Whip tasted a little better. But that was probably just because I was so happy to be having one in Disneyland! 🙂

  14. disneyonwheels

Mickey_MDOD  I do love rolling past the Tree House. 🙂 I hope you get to see Maynard one day. He makes the show even better!

  15. LisaDiDomenicoCameron

I loved reading your description of Adventureland in both parks. The DL versions sounds so amazing, I’d love to see it someday. What other attractions are including in the DL one besides the ones you mentioned?

  16. LeeBeatens

I love the Tiki Room too! I agree that Disneyland has the better version with the animated totums. Pirates was awesome at DL as well. Sometimes the originals are the best!

  17. JodiWhisenhunt

Great look at both Adventurelands! I have yet to see Disneyland, so I can’t compare, but now I have some things to look forward to 🙂 Btw, was the Dole Whip as tasty?

  18. Mickey_MDOD

What a great post, Melissa!  Thanks for sharing your thoughts on Adventureland.  When we were there in June Maynard didn’t do his performance (and I had never heard of him either until you mentioned him here!) so thanks for sharing the video — it was great!

I think Adventureland in the Magic Kingdom is better, one of my favorites is Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse.  I’m sorry that you aren’t able to enjoy that!
